We've put together a list of some of our favorite German Shepherd/Schutzhund books with a quick review. Any are
great for someone new to the breed and there are some for Schutzhund newbies as well.
The German Shepherd in Word and Picture
by Capt. Max von Stephanitz
The definitive book of the German Shepherd Dog. Originally published in 1928 and written, in German, by the founder
of the breed. This book is good reading, gives THE history of the breed and is an essential part of a true GSD
enthusiast's library!

German Shepherd Dogs
by Brian H. Wootton
This is an excellent book especially for those interested in learning more about structure. Written by a British
fellow, it doesn't include the SV standard. However, the SV standard in available from many other sources and we
feel this book is worth having. Originally recommended to me by my friend, Carlos Huerta.

The German Shepherd Today
by Winifred Strickland & James A. Moses
This book, in its th printing, is the book that introduced many of us old-timers to the breed. It covers many
essential topics and is very informative. A real classic.

Schutzhund
by Susan Barwig
This book, like the Winifred Strickland book, was the first introduction to Schutzhund for many of us. Although
training methods have changed and developed considerably since it was written, it still gives an excellent overview
of the sport.
